New York University faculty advisor Fritz Gerald and student president Scott Gerber held a "Kick Off" event on Friday, October 15, 2004 at the Cantor Film Center, reestablishing the once prominent NYU Student SMPTE Chapter. The event was attended by over 180 students and faculty. The evening began with a welcome by NYC SMPTE Section Chair, John Ferder of CBS Engineering, reviewing SMPTE's history and role in NYC and in the arena of film and television technical standards. Due to the rich legacy and NYC's prominent position in the industry, Ferder came with a pledge of support from the NYC SMPTE Section for continued guidance and assistance as the NYU Student SMPTE Chapter evolves.
